Life as it should be!

We visited friends in Utrecht on a recent holiday back in The Netherlands and got talking about and tasting their bread (of course!) They get their flour from this mill which is run by volunteers. It was built in 1869 just outside Utrecht. How neat is that.
There is a windmill closer to their home, still grinding wheat. However the flour is sold not at the mill but by the local butcher resulting in occasional bits of mince stuck to the flour bags so they opt to travel a further.
The database of Dutch windmills gives the locations, history photos and current state ie is it functioning, who runs it and what do they mill. There are so many still in operation!
So what do we have here on our doorstep? Well this weekend is National Mills Weekend which gives access to a great many mills across Britain. Some Scottish mills are open to the public and a few still produce flour eg Blair Atholl watermill. Worth a visit.

Sorry the images are lost - Google was unhelpful.
